A9 (04/2017)

  • Full-frame mirrorless format camera for Sony E-mount lens, mainly for pro sport photography.
  • New 24MP Full-Frame BSI Stacked “Exmor RS” CMOS Sensor.
  • New enhanced (?) BIONZ X Image Processor & Front-End LSI.
  • 20 fps for electronic shutter on native lens, and 5 fps for mechanical shutter (while A7Rii have max 5 fps only with e-mount lens).
  • Hybrid AF: 693-point PDAF (~93% coverage, ~25% faster than A7Rii) and 25-point CDAF; Eye-AF (~30% faster than A7Rii).
    • The a9 takes things to a whole new level, offering 693 phase-detection points with a whopping 93% frame coverage (represented above), even making the a7R II’s previously impressive coverage look small. Sony claims 10 fps burst shooting with AF when using adapted lenses, up from the lowly 3 fps of the a7R II with Metabones or LA-EA3 adapters. Sony claims that autofocus acquisition has been improved by 25%, and eye and face-detection rates have improved by 30% compared to the a7R II. It can also focus in one stop dimmer light (-3EV with a F2.0 lens).
  • Bigger buffer: 240 compressed-RAW (while A7Rii: 23 Raw); Faster Write card speed ().
  • New join-stick, new AF-On button, customized My Menu
  • Has both Mechanical and Electronic shutter: max 1/32000 (silence e-shutter)
  • EVF: 3.68Mp QuadTrue Finder, 0.78x, black-out free;
  • LCD: 1.44Mp (800x600px) Touch for AF-point selection; Full Articulating Tilt-Swivel; can disable LCD/EVF auto-switch when screen pop-out (?);
  • Video: 4K; 120fps with 1280×960
  • ISO may not be as good as A7Rii (because the sensor is stacked only, not BSI) (???)
  • Dual SD card slots; 5-axis IBIS.
  • 1Gbps Ethernet port
  • New battery NP-FZ100 (~2.2x of FW-50 for A7)
  • Listed price: $4500.

Sony A99ii (11/2016)

  • Full-frame DSLR format camera for Sony A-mount lens (which is well-known for faster focus).
  • New 42MP Full-Frame BSI “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor (newer than A7Rii sensor).
  • New BIONZ X Image Processor & Front-End LSI  (newer than A7Rii BIONZ X processor).
  • A99mk2 has 12 fps , 8 fps, 6 fps and 4 fps at full resolution with AF (while A7Rii have max 5 fps only with e-mount lens).
  • Hybrid AF: 79-points Dedicated PDAF  (thru STL mirror) + 399 on-sensor PDAF (15 dedicated Cross AF points 79 hybrid Cross AF points) (while A7Rii has no cross AF points).
  • A99ii has bigger buffer: 71 jpg at 8fps, 57 RAW, 56 Raw+Jpg (while A7Rii: 23 jpg at 5fps, 23 Raw, 22 Raw+jpg); Faster Write card speed (higher than A7Rii which is max at 35MB/s).
  • Video: 4K; Slow and Quick motion video (1fps~120fps); Slog3.
  • ISO is almost as good as A7Rii (~3000 DXO score)
  • Dual SD card slots; Full Articulating Tilt-Swivel LCD; 5-axis IBIS.
  • Physical Dimensions (WxHxD) 5.6 x 4.1 x 3.0″ / 142.6 x 104.2 x 76.1 mm; Weight: 1.87 lb / 849 g (with battery and memory card).

  • 5-axis IBIS (~2.5 stops), touch-to-focus screen, RAW (while A6300 is lossy RAW).
  • 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor.
  • Autofocus: same hybrid AF system as the mid-level Sony a6300 and performance is identical.
  • Same 425 on-sensor phase detection elements as the A6300, but with a much deeper buffer thanks to additional processing power from a front-end LSI chip.
  • Video 4K, Built-in flash, weather-sealed (as of A6300), silent shutter (as of A6300), USB 2.0.
